Premier League champions Manchester City have submitted a bid for Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips, according to Football Insider.

City boss Pep Guardiola has identified the Leeds United midfielder as an ideal replacement for Manchester City captain Fernandinho.

37 year old Fernandinho will leave Manchester City this summer when his contract expires after 9 years at the club.

Fernandinho joined Manchester City in 2013 from Ukraine club Shakhtar Donetsk and won five Premier League titles, among other trophies.

After announcing the arrival of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund on Monday, City have now quickly switched to finding a replacement for Fernandinho.

According to Football Insider, Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is Pep Guardiola’s top target to replace Fernandinho.

26 year old Phillips is a Leeds United academy graduate and also an England international.

Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of Phillips, according to Football Insider, and has made it clear at City how much he wants the Leeds United midfielder in his revamped team next season.

The report doesn’t reveal how much Manchester City have offered for Phillips but it is believed £50million could be enough to seal a deal for the midfielder.

Manchester City face competition for Phillips from multiple Premier League rivals, including Aston Villa, West Ham, Newcastle United and Manchester United.

However, City have the edge in the race for Phillips as the Blues offers him Champions League and a genuine chance to win trophies.

Phillips is also not willing to join Manchester United due to the rivalry between Leeds United and Manchester United. The midfielder does not wish to upset Leeds fans, being a boyhood supporter of the club himself.

Phillips has made a total of 234 appearances for Leeds’s first team, also scoring 14 times and assisting 13 goals in the process.

Phillips has a contract with Leeds United until 2024.
