England international Kalvin Phillips has told Leeds United that he wants to play under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City next season, according to Football Insider.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of the 26 year old midfielder and wants him as a replacement for Fernandinho.

Fernandinho is leaving the Etihad at age 37 after nine trophy-laden years’ service and Guardiola sees Phillips as the ideal replacement for the Manchester City captain.

Pep Guardiola has reportedly told Manchester City chiefs how much he wants Phillips in his Manchester City squad for next season.

Leeds could potentially hold Phillips to his contract, but that is not now looking likely given the player’s desire to leave.

According to The Athletic, Manchester City are preparing to submit a bid for Phillips this summer following the player’s desire to move.

The Athletic also adds that Manchester City believe that a fee between £45 million and £50 million should be enough to sign the England international midfielder.

Manchester City have reportedly tracked Phillips for several months and the Blues believe he’s the right player for Manchester City.

It is believed the regime at the Etihad is one that Phillips would be able to slip into comfortably: a possession-based model of play.

Discussions about recruiting Phillips became more intense after Fernandinho revealed in April that he would move on when his contract expired this summer.

Pep Guardiola wants competition for Rodri — ensuring the depth of squad that allows the club to continue competing on four fronts each season.

Manchester City reportedly lead the race to sign Phillips this summer but there’s also strong interest from Aston Villa, West Ham, Newcastle United and Man United.

However, Manchester City have one advantage over the other clubs interested in signing Phillips – Guardiola’s side are able to offer Champions League football next season as well as a side capable of winning trophies immediately.

Phillips made only 20 Premier League appearances among 26 in all competitions in 2021-22 after being struck down by a hamstring injury in early December.
