Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed Erling Haaland chose Manchester City over Real Madrid this summer.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez had claimed Real Madrid rejected the chance to sign Haaland due to the form of Karim Benzema but Romano insists that’s not true.

According to Romano, Real Madrid held several meetings with Haaland but the Norway international chose Manchester City.

Romano told Caught Offside: “Manchester City have not yet released any details on Erling Haaland’s release clause and do not want to comment.

“I think it is also something that we can understand, since Erling has just joined the club and there is no need to comment on future scenarios.

“Real Madrid certainly negotiated for Haaland, there was more than one meeting for Erling to join Madrid but it was the player who chose Manchester, not Real Madrid who rejected Haaland.

“Spain is a possibility for his future, but to date any reports about negotiations or release clauses are not correct.

“Man City want to plan with Haaland for the present and future, so there are not even contacts with anyone else.”

What did Real Madrid boss say about Manchester City striker Erling Haaland?

Perez said in interview with El Chiringuito: “We have the best 9 in the world and we weren’t going to bring in Haaland to have him on the bench, right?

“Clause in two years? I don’t know. We have no interest now other than to build the new team with the youngsters we have and some reinforcement.”

Explaining why he chose Manchester City, Erling Haaland said: “This is a proud day for me and my family.

“I have always watched City and have loved doing so in recent seasons.

“You can’t help but admire their style of play, it’s exciting and they create a lot of chances, which is perfect for a player like me.

“There are so many world-class players in this squad and Pep is one of the greatest managers of all-time, so I believe I am in the right place to fulfil my ambitions.

“I want to score goals, win trophies and improve as a footballer and I am confident I can do that here.

“This is a great move for me and I can’t wait to get started in pre-season.”
