Manchester City are closing in on the signing of free agent Stefan Ortega, according to Daily Mail.

The 29 year old goalkeeper is set to undergo a medical at Manchester City next week and will be back-up to first-choice goalkeeper Ederson.

Manchester City are in need of a back-up goalkeeper with current back-up goalkeeper Zack Steffen keen on leaving Manchester City in search of regular football.

There have also been doubts about Steffen’s future at City since his blunder contributed to a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final in April.

Ortega was unable to prevent Arminia being relegated from the Bundesliga last season, conceding 53 goals in 33 games and keeping just six clean sheets.

He is expected to sign a three year contract with Manchester City after undergoing a medical next week.

Ortega started every one of Arminia’s games in the German top-flight last term, bar one due to Covid-19.

Ortega was on standby for Germany’s Euro 2020 squad and has been previously linked with a move to Bayern Munich as a back-up to Manuel Neuer, according to Goal.

Manchester City recently sold highly-rated young goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to Premier League side Southampton for £12million.

Bazunu spent the previous two seasons on loan in League One and failed to make a first-team appearance for Manchester City.

Current Manchester City third-choice keeper Scott Carson has already signed a new 12-month contract to remain at Etihad Stadium.

Meanwhile, Manchester City have reached an agreement with Leeds United for the signing of Kalvin Phillips.

Manchester City will pay £42million for the England international with the possibility of a further £3m in add-ons.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola identified Phillips as a top midfield target for the club with club captain Fernandinho leaving the club as a free agent at the end of June.
