Former Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson has questioned his former side’s decision to repurchase Nathan Ake, despite letting him leave the club years ago.

Chelsea are looking to reinforce their back line, following the summer departures of the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Anders Christiansen.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has identified a number of replacements for his departed stars, with Juventus centre back, Matthijs de Ligt and Nathan Ake, top of the list.

However, Glen Johnson has claimed Nathan Ake isn’t good enough to replace Antonio Rudiger at Chelsea. According to Johnson, Ake is just an “OK” player.

Speaking recently to GGRecon, Johnson, who also played for Liverpool, was asked if he thought Chelsea fans would be ‘underwhelmed’ with the signing of Ake, to which he replied, “Yes definitely.

“No disrespect to Ake, but I think most people were surprised when he went to Manchester City, certainly for that amount of money [£40m].

“Put it this way, he didn’t blow my mind when he was at Bournemouth. He’s just ‘OK’.

“Then we saw the amount of money for him to go to City, and it was like: ‘Jesus, where have they seen that?’

“I don’t think he’s a suitable replacement for Rudiger at all.”

Meanwhile, Ake is said to be valued at around £50 million, and is eager to return to Stamford Bridge, although it remains to be seen whether Pep Guardiola will be willing to sell to a Premier league rival.
