Julian Alvarez has played his last game for River Plate, ahead of his move to Manchester City.

He was signed by Manchester City in January but was loaned back out to River Plate where he would remain for the rest of the season.

Alvarez was unable to prevent River Plate’s exit from the Copa Libertadores as they drew 0-0 with Velez Sarsfield on Wednesday night. River Plate had lost the first-leg 1-0.

The 22-year-old played the duration of the match, picking up a yellow card in the 95th minute.

After the game against Velez Sarsfield on Wednesday night, Alvarez was in tears as he said goodbye to his River Plate teammates.

Following the end of his loan spell at River Plate, Alvarez will travel to Manchester City on Friday to begin a new chapter in his career.

Meanwhile, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has identified the perfect replacement for Raheem Sterling, who is set to join rivals Chelsea.

Talks between Manchester City and Chelsea have accelerated in recent days, making a deal seem likely to happen in the next few days.

With Sterling now set to join Chelsea, Manchester City have now identified the perfect replacement for the 27 year old England international.

According to The Sun, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola wants to replace Raheem Sterling with Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry.

Gnabry has turned down a new contract with German champions Bayern Munich worth just over £200,000 a week.

Bayern are keen to keep the former Arsenal attacker who has just 12 months left on his current deal.

But the German champions will be open to a sale if they cannot reach an agreement with the Germany international.

Bayern Munich are reportedly willing to accept £35million for Gnabry, a fee City will be happy to pay to sign the German forward.

Guardiola sees Gnabry as the perfect replacement for Sterling due to his ability to play on both wings as well as down the middle.

Gnabry scored 17 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich last season.
