Manchester City midfielder Rodri has sent a message to new Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips after extending his contract until 2027.

This summer, Manchester City added extra competition for Rodri, through the signing of Leeds United and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Rodri has welcomed the added competition for his role through the signing of Kalvin Phillips this summer.

“He is a great player,” Rodri said of his new Manchester City teammate.

“We saw that at Leeds. We need this kind of player because when Fernandinho left we need physical players who can play holding midfielder and in forward positions.

“We need this kind of player, so I think it is a great signing.

Rodri continued by telling the club’s official website, “I think we have made four great signings.

“The team always tries to get better, and you need new players (to do that) of course.”

Meanwhile, Brighton hope to stop Marc Cucurella from joining Manchester City by offering the 23 year old left-back a new contract, according to The Athletic.

Conversations with the defender’s representatives are at a preliminary stage, with Cucurella still having four years remaining on his existing deal, signed only last summer.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is interested in signing the Brighton left-back but Brighton owner Tony Bloom has revealed they are yet to receive an offer from Manchester City.

“Marc is a tremendous player, a tremendous person,” Bloom said. “He’s brilliant for the dressing room.

“He was unbelievably good last season, his first season in the Premier League. We’re hoping for more to come and we haven’t had a bid for him.

“We’ve got to be realistic if a certain bid comes in and the player wants to move, the player will move, but we are not anticipating, we’re not looking for our best players to move on.

“If it happens and we get a bid then we have to consider it, but until that point, we carry on.”
