Joao Cancelo has been handed the No.7 shirt at Manchester City following the exit of Raheem Sterling to Chelsea this summer.

Joao Cancelo has been surprisingly handed the No.7 shirt despite being a full-back, having previously worn No.27 since his arrival in 2019 from Juventus.

“This is a special number for me,” he said. “It’s my mother’s birthday and it’s also her favourite number.

“I decided to choose this number because I think it brings me luck and I hope it brings luck to the team too, so this year we can win many titles.

“I know it’s a number that comes with a lot of responsibility for what Sterling has done for the club.”

Cancelo’s mum, who helped inspire the number change, died in a car crash nine years ago.

Outside of Sterling, it also means he follows Georgi Kinkladze, Stephen Ireland, David White, Peter Barnes, Mike Summerbee and Robbie Fowler as other former holders of the seven shirt.
