Manchester City have joined Chelsea in the race for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez after Pep Guardiola requested for the signing of the midfielder, according to Fichajes.

Guardiola plans to strengthen his midfield options next season and has identified Fernandez, who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, as the ideal signing.

Despite Manchester City’s squad coming across as complete from many angles, Guardiola is far from satisfied with the quality. He wants to make the team stronger in every position.

Guardiola is reportedly dissatisfied with summer signing Kalvin Phillips and wants Manchester City to sign Fernandez next summer. Guardiola views the Argentine as a viable competitor for Rodri in the holding midfield position.

Chelsea have had an offer for Fernandez rejected by Benfica this January with the Portuguese giants only willing to let the midfielder leave if his €120million release clause is paid in full.

Chelsea remain interested in signing the 22 year old midfielder this January and are expected to submit another offer for Fernandez before the transfer window closes.
