Manchester City right-back Joao Cancelo joined Bayern Munich on loan in January after falling out with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez revealed this week that the Spanish side were initially offered the chance to sign Cancelo in January before City made a U-turn.

What Xavi didn’t say is why Manchester City changed its mind about Cancelo joining Barcelona in January.

According to a report on Manchester Evening News, Barcelona wanted Cancelo in January but were not prepared to cover all of the finances involved for the second half of the season; Bayern Munich were, and so City dealt with the Bundesliga champions instead.

Bayern Munich have an option to buy Cancelo at the end of his loan for around €70million, but are not expected to follow through.

City have a decision to make on Cancelo this summer. The full-back is under contract at the Etihad until 2027 but isn’t wanted at the club by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
